Nutritional components affecting skeletal development in fish larvae ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Takeuchi, Toshio.
Marine fish larvae undergo major functional and morphological changes during the developmental stages and several factors can interfere with the normal development of larvae and affect fry quality. Skeletal malformations, such as spinal malformation-scoliosis, lordosis, coiled vertebral column-, missing or additional fin rays, bending opercle or jaw malformations, are frequently observed in hatchery-reared larvae. This paper reviews the effects of some nutritional components on skeletal development in larvae of a number of fish species. In the dietary lipid fraction, for instance, it was proven that the phospholipid concentration affected the spinal malformation rate in sea bass fed a compound diet from mouth opening onwards. Phosphatidylinositol, in...

Observaciones sobre embriones de larvas y juveniles de la pescadilla (Cynoscion striatus) OceanDocs
de Ciechomski, J.D.; Cassia, M.C..
Observations on the embrionic and larval development of Cynoscion striatus are presented. The description are made on the basis of material obtained by artificial fertilization. Eggs are pelagic, spherical, 700-840µ in diameter and with single oil globule of 210µ-240µ. The yolk is homogeneous and the chorion has smooth surface. The embryonic development is short and at temperatures of 19°-20°C hatching takes place, 34-36 hours after the fertilization. The larvae at hatching are small, about 2 mm in length and not advanced in their development. The mouth is not functional and the anus is not open. The oil globule is situated in the posterior part of the yolk sac; the position of the anus is close to the posterior end of the yolk sac and the digestice tract...

Occurrence of Larvae and Juveniles of Eucinostomus argenteus, Eucinostomus gula, Menticirrhus americanus, Menticirrhus littoralis, Umbrina coroides and Micropogonias furnieri at Pontal do Sul beach, Paraná BABT
Godefroid,Rodrigo Santiago; Santos,César; Hofstaetter,Marion; Spach,Henry Louis.
Despite its importance, most ichthyoplankton studies in the South-Southeastern coast of Brazil, have been accomplished on the continental shelf. Regarding the beach environment, recognized as a nursery, little is known about the ichthyoplankton. We analyzed 288 samples collected with a 18 by 2 m seine net, 1 mm mesh and a conical plankton net, with a mesh of 300 mum and a 60 cm mouth. Eucinostomus argenteus comprised 78 % of the larvae and juveniles caught in the samples. The occurrence of gerreids was strongly concentrated in the summer, while the Menticirrhus littoralis, Menticirrhus americanus and Umbrina coroides were present during all seasons. M.littoralis was most abundant during spring, while M. americanus and U. coroides dominated during winter....

Oceanographic and faunistic structures across an Angola Current intrusion into northern Namibia waters. OceanDocs
John, H.C.H.; Mohrholz, V.; Lutjeharms, J.R.E..
It is thought that the penetration of Angolan waters through the Angola–Benguela Frontal Zone (ABFZ) into the much cooler Benguela regime may come about by a poleward slope undercurrent as well as by cross-frontal filaments. To test this hypothesis, two zonal transects off the northern Namibian coast were surveyed by CTD casts, current measurements and ichthyoplankton samples during April 1999. Simultaneous sea-surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a concentration, and wind data were obtained from satellite. The multidisciplinary results are described. An intense intrusion of the Angola Current into northern Namibian waters occurred with distinct signals of high temperatures and salinities, low chlorophyll-a concentration, and Angolan fish larvae of both...

Ontogeny of the digestive tract of thick lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) larvae reared in "mesocosms" ArchiMer
Zouiten, Dora; Ben Khemis, I; Besbes, R; Cahu, Chantal.
This work describes the ontogeny of the digestive tract in thick lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) larvae reared until day 36 post-hatching with the semi-extensive technology in mesocosms. Diet was constituted by live preys, rotifers, Arternia and wild zooplankton, then compound diet was added from day 20 (p. h.). Linear growth, weight growth and digestive enzymes specific activities were studied during larval ontogeny. Pancreatic enzymes (trypsin and amylase) and intestinal enzymes (leucine-alanine peptidase "Leu-ala", aminopeptidase N "AN" and alkaline phosphatase "AP") were assayed in larvae sampled throughout the rearing trial to evaluate gastrointestinal maturation along the development. The trypsin specific activities were very high during the...

Ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract of marine fish larvae ArchiMer
Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
Marine fish larvae undergo major morphological and cellular changes during the first month of life. The ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract combines these two aspects of the larval development and is very interesting in that the timing of functional changes appears genetically hard-wired. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the gastrointestinal development process in marine fish larvae, with particular attention to three species: sea bass; red drum; and sole, since the description of gut maturation in fish larvae was initiated during the last decade with these species. During the early stages, marine fish larvae exhibit particular digestive features. Concerning the exocrine pancreas, amylase expression decreases with age from the third week...

Pathology of marine warmwater finfish in Israel: Problems and research ArchiMer
Colorni, A.
A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells.

Patrones de distribución espacio-temporal de los estadíos embrionarios y larvales de la anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita Hubbs & Marini) a micro y macro-escala. Su relación con la supervivencia OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P..
This dissertation is focused on the study of implications of spatial patterns on survival of eggs and larvae and subsequent recruitment of the SW Atlantic anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. The study of distribution patterns is encompassed within the conceptual framework of the analysis of reproductive strategies of marine bony fish, as adaptations that enable them to cope with and actively exploit environmental variability, regulating their abundance and avoiding extinction. The SW Atlantic anchovy, is ideally suitable for studies on reproductive biology and recruitment on a comparative basis. Its spawning and nursery grounds are located in very diverse ecosystems. This variety refers to their physico-chemical properties, carrying capacity, the influence of...

Patrones de utilización de la laguna Mar Chiquita (Buenos Aires, Argentina) y área costera adyacente por parte de los primeros estadios ontogénicos de peces OceanDocs
Bruno, Daniel O..
The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. The richness and mean density of larvae were higher at the offshore area than at the lagoon. Inside the lagoon the dominant species in larval stage was Brevoortia...

Potentiel probiotique de levures productrices des polyamines dans le développement du système digestif du bar Dicentrarchus labrax et de la cabrilla arenera Paralabrax maculatofasciatus ArchiMer
Tovar, Dariel.
The interest in probiotics for aquaculture is increasing rapidly. In the present work we evaluated the potential of some yeast to induce the larvae gut maturation in sea bass larvae Dicentrarchus labrax. The production of polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine was quantified in ten yeast strains using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Afterwards, fluorescently labelled yeast adhesion to the intestine of sea bass larvae and the spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus) was evaluated by fluorescent microscopy. Two of them, CBS 8339 strain (Debaryomyces hansenii) and X2180 strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) produce the polyamines of our interest. The same strains showed the best adhering capabilities to the sea bass and spotted sand...

Predation of Piaractus mesopotamicus and Oreochromis niloticus larvae by Pantala flavescens with different length classes - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.5470 Biological Sciences
Lacerda, Carlos Henrique Figueiredo; Universidade Federal de Pernambuco; Hayashi, Carmino; Instituto de Pesca; Galdioli, Eliana Maria; Universidade de Maringá; Fernandes, Carlos Eduardo Bento; Universidade de Maringá.
The experiment had as objective to study the survival of Piaractus mesopotamicus and Oreochromis niloticus larvae subject to predation by Pantala flavescens larvae with different length classes. We used 120 larvae of P. mesopotamicus, 120 of O. niloticus, and also 24 larvae of Pantala flavescens, distributed in 24 aquariums with useful volume for 2 L, being placed one Odonate for aquarium. The treatments differed as regard to the prey species and the predator size, being kept a control treatment. An aquarium (2 L) containing one larvae of Odonate and 10 larvae of fish were considered an experimental unit. After the beginning, each three hours (18:00, 21:00, 0:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00h), the remnant larvae of fish (alive) in each...

Preliminary results on the nutritional evaluation of omega-3-HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii for larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Amat, F.; Hontoria, F.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this <i>Artemia</i> source. Growth was not significantly different between the treatments, most probably due to the large variation in growth...

Production of live prey for marine fish larvae ArchiMer
Kraul, S.
Tropical marine fish larvae vary in their requirements for live planktonic food. Selection of live prey species for culture depends on larval size and larval tolerance of water quality. This report describes some of the cultured prey species, and their uses and limits as effective food for fish larvae. Methods are presented for the culture of phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, and other live feeds.

Rearing techniques for difficult marine fish larvae OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Divanach, P.; Kentouri, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
In finfish mariculture, seed production and larval rearing still form the bottleneck for all ongrowing operations and are considered as the main limiting factor for industrial development. Through trial and error more than through biological understanding two opposite hatchery techniques have been developed which surprisingly control a multiparametric combination of different factors but aspire to the same objective of conformity with wild standards and the cost-effective production of larvae. In intensive aquaculture, the rearing technique is characterised by high initial larval densities in small tanks under strict hydraulic, thermic, and nutritional conditions. The light conditions are artificial. The temperature and quality of water are controlled. The...

Recent changes in ichthyoplanktonic assemblages of the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Di Pane, Julien; Koubbi, Philippe; Giraldo, Carolina; Lefebvre, Valerie; Caboche, Josselin; Marchal, Paul; Loots, Christophe.
ish assemblages vary through time in both abundance and diversity, often due to changes in climate. The potential consequences of these changes on the larval phase need to be considered. In the Eastern English Channel, fish larvae of 30 taxa, from surveys conducted during spring in the nineties and in 2017 with bongo nets, were used to investigate seasonal and interannual changes in larval assemblages with different statistical tests and multivariate analyses (Outlying Mean Index, Principal Coordinate Analysis and variance partitioning). The major change observed was significant lower abundances in 2017 (in April and May) compared to the nineties. Most of the dominant taxa were two to three-fold less abundant in 2017 than the 1990s. We suggest that the...

Review on the dietary effects of phospholipids in fish and crustacean larviculture OMA
Coutteau, P.; Geurden, I.; Camara, M.R.; Bergot, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A beneficial effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation in purified diets in terms of survival, growth, resistance to stress tests, and occurrence of deformities has been demonstrated in larval and juvenile stages of various species of fish and crustaceans. The exact determination of PL requirements in larvae is complicated due to the difficulty to bio-encapsulate PL in live prey. Furthermore, the great variety in purity and composition of the PL sources, and the experimental conditions (such as diet formulation and extent of co/prefeeding with live food) makes it difficult to compare requirements determined with artificial diets. Larval stages are extremely sensitive to a dietary PL deficiency and require higher levels of dietary PL than...

Search for beneficial bacterial strains for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L.) larviculture OMA
Huys, L.; Dhert, P.; Robles, R.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Swings, J..
The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12...

Seasonal variation in fish larvae at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Castro,Marcia S. de; Bonecker,Ana Cristina Teixeira; Valentin,Jean L..
Studies were carried out to find out qualitative and quantitative temporal variations in fish larvae to relate seasonal, diurnal and tidal cycles to the density of larvae. Sampling was performed at one station, during two three-day periods in September 1995 and March 1996. Samples were collected during ebb and flood tides,in oblique hauls using a bongo net of 500 µm mesh size. A total of 42 taxa were identified. The families Engraulidae (Cetengraulis edentulus, Anchoa lyolepis) and Clupeidae (Harengula jaguana) had high mean densities and dominated both periods. Higher larval mean densities occurred in March, a period of relatively high temperatures and low salinities. The diurnal pattern of larval abundance consisted of high densities at night and low...

Some aspects of the ecology of fish larvae in the floodplain of the high Paraná river, Brazil Zoologia
Baumgartner,Gilmar; Nakatani,Keshiyu; Cavicchioli,Maristela; Baumgartner,Maria do Socorro Tenório.
The spatial and temporal distribution and nychthemeral variation of fish larvae in six stations (Ivinhema, Patos, Paraná, Cortado, Baía and Guaraná) in the floodplain of the high Paraná river are provided. The paper also provides the relationship of this distribution to some environmental factors. From March 1992 to February 1993 ichthyoplanktonic samples were collected by conic cylindrical nets, with 0.5mm of mesh size and fluxometer attached, in 10-minute hauls at the surface and bottom during nychthemeral cycles. At the same time water samples were taken to determine environmental factors. During the above period 5,672 larvae were collected: 57,6% from Cortado station and 13,2% from Ivinhema and Paraná stations. The greatest densities were recorded...
